As a favor to the Early American Industries Association (EAIA), we’re opening the Lost Art Press storefront in Covington, Ky., this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The EAIA is holding its annual meeting this week at the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, Ky. I wish I could be there, but I have books to edit (more on our progress this weekend). On Sunday, members will be driving home, and so we are opening the storefront for the curious. If you are also curious, you are welcome to stop by as well. I’m working on a Danish Modern chest of drawers in some incredible curly oak and will have that on the bench – not to mention…

A good friend of mine is beginning to do interior design (as a job, she’s always done it in her own home which is beautiful) and one of her new clients had a little nook perfect for a desk. She asked me to make a little floating desk to fit there but the kicker was that I couldn’t get into the space until the time that I could install it (due to other work being done and my schedule). She took really good measurements and gave good simple direction for what she was envisioning. It turned out to be a very simple build, but to great effect. She was really happy with it, and I think it fit…
Recently, I recorded an episode of the Entreneato podcast (in a car, on a phone.. sorry about the audio, Matt.) and it was a great time with a cool guy, the host Matt Neff. We talked about all sorts of things, but at the end of the conversation, Matt said that he’d always wanted a wallet made out of an old Atari game cartridge. He’d seen them before, but this wasn’t something I’ve ever even thought about, much less seen available. When I got home, I pulled out some old Atari games to compare them to the size of my wallet. Almost identical in volume, shape and size. Note, I do wear my wallet in…
I got a Land Cruiser last year, partially because of the great cargo area in it (with the back seats removed). Since I got it, I’ve been wanting to build some sort of storage to hide and store tools as well as the typical gear you should keep around (first aid kit, roadside assistance kit, straps, jumper cables, etc.) I finally got around to it, and it’s already a lot more useful than I expected! Recently I did an install for a desk and had to take several tools with me in the back of the truck. After the install was complete, I was hungry for a local burger place. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving…
Quick teaser for my upcoming Quarterly Maker Box! If you haven’t heard already, I got tapped to curate the next Quarterly Maker Box! Basically I get to pick out a bunch of cool stuff, all related to Maker and send it in a gift box to all of you guys. I’ve finally settled on a theme for the box – it’s Work/Play balance. For me, making is all about striking that perfect balance of fun and utility. I am including three kits: one for your home, one for utility and the last one just for fun. If you guys are fans of my projects, you’ll be big fans of this Maker Box! Think of it as three-mini projects…
