A few weeks ago I headed down to Tampa and helped my friend Tom build a bench. Alas we have no normal show notes for this episode and video edited at the Tampa International Airport. As with the bench we built, the editing and posting was done on the fly. Don’t forget about the +Modern Woodworkers Association Podcast. We talk woodworking with Guests from around the world of woodworking every other week. Subscribe to the RSS feed or iTunes today.
The hard work over the last few months has paid off and the Bartop Arcade is done. It was crated and shipped the last week in April. Now, it has finally arrived in Petaluma and +Jason Howell has taken it out of the crate. With the help of +Aaron Newcomb and the others at +TWiT, he was able to wire the various buttons, balls, speakers and monitor to the wee Raspberry Pi 2.Tomorrow, Saturday, May 14, 2016, our (mostly my) almost year long odyssy comes to an end. On +The New Screen Savers Jason will be reviewing the wiring and how to setup and run the bartop arcade. I’ll on too, as a guest to discuss the carcass construction and how a …
I made some pens for troops out of my broken drumsticks for James Green’s Pen Turning Challenge. Used drumsticks are a great source of nice wood for pens and other projects. If you know a drummer, ask them for some sticks! Watch me make one in this video!
The Woodworking Show in Atlanta was a blast! It was nice having the show in my home town. In this video I share some clips of the exhibitors, some selfies with other YouTube woodworkers, and pictures and video from about 25 people who visited my shop. Here is a picture of the crowd at the Video Woodworkers booth. It was a pleasure meeting lots of other woodworkers and many people who watch my videos. If you missed the show, I hope you can make it to the next one where the Video Woodworkers booth appears.
I made a “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me” whirligig for our local woodworking club’s whirligig contest that was held at our Spring picnic. It was a beautiful day and the whirligig did a great job at keeping the flies away from my plate. Watch this video of the build and see it in action! The propeller is made from fly swatters from the dollar store with the handles cut off. I made a red square hub out of wood and hot glued in the fly swatters.I used leftover wire from a fly swatter handle, an eye bolt, and a piece of straight 1/8″ steel rod to make the action mechanism. I cut these with large wire cutters and bent …
I’ve wanted to upgrade to a better scroll saw for a long time so I can make more detailed projects. Recently, the stars aligned and with the help of a store sale, some gift cards, and a little extra cash, I was able to order the DeWalt DW788 Scroll Saw. Watch as I unbox the saw and make my first project on it using Steve Good’s Bear Cubs Silhouette Pattern. The saw was packed well and arrived in new condition; however, I did encounter one minor electrical issue. The speed control dial was working intermittently. I noticed if I moved the plastic casing that it was attached to, it would affect the speed. I removed the screws and found that …

<![CDATA[// ><!– (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); //–><!]]> This was a fun project that involved one of my favorite hobbies and that’s going shopping at the antique store. I’m lucky enough to live close to a large antique mall in Maumee, Ohio and that’s where I found this old vintage clock I could upcycle into something new. What I liked about the clock is the face and the typography of the numbers so I decided to keep that and scrap the rest. I made a new case out of mahogany wood and guitar amp grill cloth. I liked the idea of having the clock offset with a lot of negative space and decided to…
<![CDATA[// ><!– (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); //–><!]]> Way back in 1992 when I was just a junior in high school, I made a bent laminated wooden spoon in shop class for a Mother’s Day gift. Now 24 years later I’m recreating the spoon for an updated gift to give to Mom this Mother’s Day. Bent lamination involves resawing the wood into thin bendable strips that can be placed in a mold and glued in place. Once the glue dries the spoon shaped can be cut out on the bandsaw with some final shaping done with the spindle and orbital sander. This is a quick and fun woodworking project that can be done in just a…
<![CDATA[// ><!– (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); //–><!]]> This is one of those projects I’ve been thinking about for a long time and really glad I followed through on. I couldn’t be happier with how they came out. These were made by routing a very small groove into two pieces of wood to hold the graphite and glued together. I tried to have continuous grain to hide the seam and it worked pretty well. I sanded a hexagon shape into each pencil but it’s not really noticeable because as I was doing some final sanding they rounded out. The shape is still there and the pencils don’t roll off the table but the shape…
Easy Woodworking Project for Beginners <![CDATA[// ><!– (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); //–><!]]> This is one of those woodworking projects that I’ve had in the back of my mind for months. We don’t have room for end tables in our living room and depending on where you sit the coffee table can be out of reach. This project was made in about 2 hours which includes the time it took to glue and finish. Something I don’t do very often is go into a project without a plan and that’s exactly what I did here and it turned out great. I just started cutting to size on the table saw what I thought looked to…
