I found my Grandad’s 75 year old camping kerosene lantern – can I restore it? When we moved into my grandparents house I found a few family treasures that were his – one being a 75 year old kerosine lantern. It’s been floating around my shop for a few years and with our summer being […]
More on the Ruler Trick, part 4 • Sunday, April 30th, 2023 Ironically, I do not use a ruler for the Ruler Trick. As I described in a post about five years ago, I like a 0.020″ strip of plastic cut from shim stock and roughened on the bottom for a better grip on the […]
I built four Krenov-style sawhorses about ten years ago and they have served me well. I made them from softwood lumber (pine, I think) using through mortise and tenon joinery. I wedged the tenons of the stretcher, but elected not to reinforce the leg-to-foot joints. Recently, on a couple of the horses, those leg-to-foot joints […]

Home > Woodworking > Duplo / Lego Coffee Table Duplo / Lego Coffee Table I finished the coffee table I’ve been working on for the basement this morning! A rustic arts and crafts style with a bit of Asian / Greene & Greene influence. Made out of black walnut. This was supposed to be a […]
Dividers sketch by David Fisher. Every woodworker I know wants to get better at design. Yet it’s hard to carve out time to devote to it. Perhaps it’s because most of us go it alone. Design like any skill responds to our time and attention, but progress often comes in fits and starts. I’ll be […]
The progression of learning to use hand planes is often something like this: Stage 1: I tried to use (my grandpa’s / flea market find / Home Depot $19) hand plane, and it sucks. It just chatters across the wood, doesn’t make shavings, and doing any work with it would take FOREVER. (I goes onto a […]
I’m happy to announce that I’ll be resuming private lessons for hand tool woodworking this summer in my basement workshop in Ayer, MA. The anticipated start will be late June, 2021. By that time, it will have been at least 2 weeks after my second coronavirus vaccination. I require that all participants have completed their […]
Fine Woodworking Magazine Fine Woodworking Magazine —– the very mention of it among woodworkers brings recognition and I think, a certain amount of respect. Since it’s first issue in 1975, it has been the bench mark of fine woodworking and a cut above the other publications that have come and gone since then. I remember seeing my first issue while I was going to San Francisco State University pursuing my industrial arts teaching credential. Those early issues were black and white only! I graduated from SFSU in 1977 and began my teaching career in Las Vegas that year as well. Like so many others at that time, subscribing to and keeping all of the issues of Fine Woodworking magazine was …

I loooove me some blankets so in my living room. I have plenty of them however, I don’t have any place to store them so they are scattered everywhere. This week I’m fixing that by building a coffee table that has storage inside. I was thinking about building one of those tables where the top actually lifts up and turns into a surface to eat on (while sitting on the couch) but we actually never eat in the living room so I figured I would stick with a more traditional style of having a hinged lid that opens. For the hardware I used special hinges called torsion hinges and even though these are kinda pricy I picked them …
